Anderson Thives’s Art

Collage is a recent and expressive way of art. It consists of juxtaposing appropriate materials from various origins on the same surface. It emerged along with Cubism and was also an extremely important artistic technique in Modernism. Great names of art were the first ones to use it, such as Pablo Picasso and his cubist collage, in which he already made references to commercial products with his signature, besides talents like Georges Braque, Max Ernst, Henri Matisse, among others.

Advancing a little more in history, Pop Art came out and it is where Anderson Thives’s works fit. Not for the simple fact of collage being more used, but for being used the way it is: colorful, cheerful, vibrant, being, in a certain way, the manifestation of an attitude, a new way to face life, in accordance with the social events. In the pop artists’ opinions, art became very introspective and the world outside of it. So, the proposal of Pop Art was: treat and see the world with other eyes to be able to incorporate it into art.

With a pop-contemporary style and a taste for the culture of the images, specific, direct and easy to assimilate, the artist portrays through collage all his sensitivity, expression and impact formed by a not so conventional technique.

The work is not simple; it is complex to be accomplished as a whole. With thousands of pieces of paper in varied colors, taken from magazines and catalogues and, in the majority of his pieces, totalizing five thousand pieces of paper each, the artist creates his images.

As Robert Henri would say “the theme can be whatever you want. Pretty or not. The beauty of a piece of art resides in the work of art itself”. And in Anderson Thives’s work, the themes are mostly popular.
With a great influence of Andy Warhol, Tom Welsseman and Richard Hamilton who used in their pieces the everyday reality and the popular culture, which the common people extracted from television, magazines or comic strips the majority of their visual entertainment, the artist reproduces, in his themes and his images, the change from “epic” to everyday life. Thives, with his works, wittily celebrates consumerism.

By mentioning this, we can’t stop protecting the style, despite the “visual plea” or even the incorporation of his art to the society of consumption, the pop-contemporary style stands far from being easy art, even though it may seem so. The artist’s thematic won’t ever banalize the uniqueness of his art. And, talking about “uniqueness”, maybe it would be redundant to mention the theme selections of the artist’s works, as, according to him, the reason of “unconsciously” selecting themes of his first two exhibitions, besides being popular, relies on their similarities and differences: “Hollywood” which portrays movie celebrities and “Strong Saint” (Immune to witchcraft and sorcery) which portrays images of popular saints.

The interest in the idea of public devotion to celebrities and saints as a cultural symbol of his era is visible in his exclusive art. In his first exposition, the artist reproduces with verity the
images of his favorite celebrities, like Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, which are part of Andy Warhol’s pieces of work as well. On the other hand, in “Strong Saint”, the popular saints receive new clothing, portrayed in a more human way, and in some cases show non-implicit sensuality, however, with a symbolism of faith, which exceeds the choice of the image, the colors, the illumination and the shadows.
In his other exhibition, entitled “Framed”, it is wordplay with the title-theme, just for the fun of it which brings out the true essence of this art. On it, the artist recreates a little bit of everything. Things that he has already done in other exhibitions, things that will be themes of future work, such as the pin-ups, the personalities, the series of Indian goddesses and his series of singers, in which divas like Ivete Sangalo, Vanessa da Mata, Elis Regina, among others, seem to have come out of a shampoo advertisement.

In one of his last exhibitions, the artist tried to fly higher when he decided to make the classics his new theme. And he did it. Entitled “Rereading”, as the name says, he recreates some of the most famous pieces of world art.

Artists like Da Vinci, Picasso, Tarsila do Amaral, Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Botticelli, among others, have their work “revisited” by Anderson. Like in a big play, he, who strongly lifts the collage flag, proves, with this exhibition, that the great paint art work can also be made from paper.

With a very strong social feeling in his work, due to the artist’s use of paper from magazines and catalogues as his main tools, which would be thrown away, Thives does a kind of “artistic recycling”,

in two ways: the first and more obvious one is to make use of disposable supplies, and the second one, less explicit, is to show in his work unique and exclusive images, very popular and colorful, made from material used as popular appeal, which are the advertisements enclosed in this type of media. The artist proves, this way, that in life things are not always copied. In many cases, they are recycled.

I believe that Thives’s art does not fit in “mass production”, a lot used by Pop Art artists, as, during Warhol’s days, mass production was as important as the exclusive and non-reproductive art.

The distinction between “high art” and “vulgar art” was like that at that time, however, I believe, it may have disappeared. Today, the new, the different, the creative ‘rereading’ are wanted. It’s in this game of themes and vibrant colors, which brings joy to the eyes and senses that the artist strongly rises in his career, as one of the few Brazilian artists who work exclusively with collage, through an incredible, fascinating and unique technique.
